Day 12 Satisfaction

“Fasting is rewarded because it is a cry from the heart of those who find their ultimate satisfaction in God and in God alone.”

Scripture Reading
Psalm 73 (NLT)
1Truly God is good to Israel, to those whose hearts are pure.
2But as for me, I almost lost my footing. My feet were slipping, and I was almost gone.
3For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness.
4They seem to live such painless lives; their bodies are so healthy and strong.
5They don’t have troubles like other people; they’re not plagued with problems like everyone else.
6They wear pride like a jeweled necklace and clothe themselves with cruelty.
7These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish for!
8They scoff and speak only evil; in their pride they seek to crush others.
9They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut throughout the earth.
10And so the people are dismayed and confused, drinking in all their words.
11“What does God know?” they ask. “Does the Most High even know what’s happening?”
12Look at these wicked people— enjoying a life of ease while their riches multiply.
13Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? Did I keep myself innocent for no reason?
14I get nothing but trouble all day long; every morning brings me pain.
15If I had really spoken this way to others, I would have been a traitor to your people.
16So I tried to understand why the wicked prosper. But what a difficult task it is!
17Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.
18Truly, you put them on a slippery path and send them sliding over the cliff to destruction.
19In an instant they are destroyed, completely swept away by terrors.
20When you arise, O Lord, you will laugh at their silly ideas as a person laughs at dreams in the morning.
21Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside.
22I was so foolish and ignorant— I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you.
23Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand.
24You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.
25Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth.
26My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.
27Those who desert him will perish, for you destroy those who abandon you.
28But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign LORD my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.

Key passages
Psalm 73:25-26 —“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My heart and my flesh may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Fasting thought
“When God sees the confession of need and this expression of trust, he acts, because the glory of his all-suffcient grace is at stake. The fnal answer is that God rewards fasting because fasting expresses the cry of the heart that nothing on earth can satisfy our souls besides God. God must reward this cry because God is most glorifed in us when we are most satisfed in him.” John Piper

Prayer
Father, whom have I in heaven but you? And besides you I desire nothing on earth. My heart and my flesh may fail. But you are the strength of my heart and my portion forever and ever. I declare this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Day 11 Cheerfulness

In fasting it is virtuous to conceal our suffering and discomfort with cheerfulness.

Scripture reading
Matthew 6 (NLT)
1“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.
2When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get.
3But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
4Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
5“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get.
6But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
7“When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again.
8Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!
9Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.
10May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
11Give us today the food we need,
12and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
13And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.
14“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.
15But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.
16“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get.
17But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face.
18Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
19“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.
20Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
21Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
22“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light.
23But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!
24“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.
25“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?
26Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?
27Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
28“And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing,
29yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.
30And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
31“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’
32These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.
33Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
34“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Key passages
Matthew 6:16-18 — “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Fasting thought
“Let us learn from our Lord’s instruction about fasting, the great importance of cheerfulness in our religion. Those words ‘anoint thy head and wash thy face’ are full of deep meaning. They should teach us to aim at letting men see we find that Christianity makes us happy. Never let us forget that there is not religion in looking melancholy and gloomy. Are we dissatisfied with Christ’s wages and Christ’s service? Surely not! Then let us not look as if we were.” J.C.Ryle

Prayer
Father in heaven, let me fnish this fast with joy and cheerfulness as I feed on your beauty, truth and goodness. May every growl of my stomach, every internal complaint and headache be turned into moments of dependence on you and delight in every spiritual blessing I have in Christ. In the precious name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Day 10 Cravings

Fasting has a way of revealing what our hearts really crave. It can reveal what our soul needs and how we satisfy those deepest wants.

Scripture reading
Matthew 4 (NLT)
1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil.
2For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.
3During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”
4But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple,
6and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ”
7Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’”
8Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9“I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.”
10“Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.’”
11Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.
12When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he left Judea and returned to Galilee.
13He went first to Nazareth, then left there and moved to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.
14This fulfilled what God said through the prophet Isaiah:
15“In the land of Zebulun and of Naphtali, beside the sea, beyond the Jordan River, in Galilee where so many Gentiles live,
16the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.”
17From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”
18One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.
19Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
20And they left their nets at once and followed him.
21A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too.
22They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind.
23Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness.
24News about him spread as far as Syria, and people soon began bringing to him all who were sick. And whatever their sickness or disease, or if they were demon possessed or epileptic or paralyzed—he healed them all.
25Large crowds followed him wherever he went—people from Galilee, the Ten Towns, Jerusalem, from all over Judea, and from east of the Jordan River.

Key passages
Matthew 4:2-4 — “After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’ Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Fasting thought
“Fasting can be an expression of fnding your greatest pleasure and enjoyment in life from God. That’s the case when disciplining yourself to fast means you love God more than food, that seeking him is more important to you than eating. This honors God and is a means of worshiping him as God.” Donald Whitney

Prayer
Father in heaven, only you meet my deepest needs. Today grant me the ability to turn my hunger pains into moments of worship and praise, focusing on the beauty and splendor of your holiness and reveling in your infnite mercy. May you receive all the honor and praise as I come to you in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Day 9 Thirsts

Let your thirsts drive you to God that he may satisfy your desires and meet the needs of your soul.

Scripture reading
Psalm 63 (NLT)
A psalm of David, regarding a time when David was in the wilderness of Judah.
1O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.
2I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory.
3Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you!
4I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer.
5You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy.
6I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night.
7Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings.
8I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely.
9But those plotting to destroy me will come to ruin. They will go down into the depths of the earth.
10They will die by the sword and become the food of jackals.
11But the king will rejoice in God. All who swear to tell the truth will praise him, while liars will be silenced.

Key passages
Psalm 63 1 — “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.”

Fasting thought
“Prayer needs fasting for its full growth. Prayer is the one hand with which we grasp the invisible. Fasting is the other hand, the one with which we let go of the visible….Prayer is reaching out after the unseen; fasting is letting go of all that is seen and temporal. Fasting helps express, deepen, confirm the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything, even ourselves, to attain what we seek for the kingdom of God.” Andrew Murray

Prayer
Father in heaven, I reach out to you, the only one who can satisfy my thirsty heart and meet the needs within my soul. Through this fast may I crave you and your kingdom more and more. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Day 8 Replacing vs. Abstaining

Fasting is more about replacing than it is about abstaining — replacing normal daily activities with focused praying, confessing, feeding on the Word and worshiping the Lord.

Scripture reading
Nehemiah 9 (NLT)
1On October 31 the people assembled again, and this time they fasted and dressed in burlap and sprinkled dust on their heads.
2Those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all foreigners as they confessed their own sins and the sins of their ancestors.
3They remained standing in place for three hours while the Book of the Law of the LORD their God was read aloud to them. Then for three more hours they confessed their sins and worshiped the LORD their God.
4The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Kenani—stood on the stairway of the Levites and cried out to the LORD their God with loud voices.
5Then the leaders of the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah—called out to the people: “Stand up and praise the LORD your God, for he lives from everlasting to everlasting!” Then they prayed: “May your glorious name be praised! May it be exalted above all blessing and praise!
6“You alone are the LORD. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you.
7“You are the LORD God, who chose Abram and brought him from Ur of the Chaldeans and renamed him Abraham.
8When he had proved himself faithful, you made a covenant with him to give him and his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and Girgashites. And you have done what you promised, for you are always true to your word.
9“You saw the misery of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cries from beside the Red Sea.
10You displayed miraculous signs and wonders against Pharaoh, his officials, and all his people, for you knew how arrogantly they were treating our ancestors. You have a glorious reputation that has never been forgotten.
11You divided the sea for your people so they could walk through on dry land! And then you hurled their enemies into the depths of the sea. They sank like stones beneath the mighty waters.
12You led our ancestors by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night so that they could find their way.
13“You came down at Mount Sinai and spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and instructions that were just, and decrees and commands that were good.
14You instructed them concerning your holy Sabbath. And you commanded them, through Moses your servant, to obey all your commands, decrees, and instructions.
15“You gave them bread from heaven when they were hungry and water from the rock when they were thirsty. You commanded them to go and take possession of the land you had sworn to give them.
16“But our ancestors were proud and stubborn, and they paid no attention to your commands.
17They refused to obey and did not remember the miracles you had done for them. Instead, they became stubborn and appointed a leader to take them back to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love. You did not abandon them,
18even when they made an idol shaped like a calf and said, ‘This is your god who brought you out of Egypt!’ They committed terrible blasphemies.
19“But in your great mercy you did not abandon them to die in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud still led them forward by day, and the pillar of fire showed them the way through the night.
20You sent your good Spirit to instruct them, and you did not stop giving them manna from heaven or water for their thirst.
21For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell!
22“Then you helped our ancestors conquer kingdoms and nations, and you placed your people in every corner of the land. They took over the land of King Sihon of Heshbon and the land of King Og of Bashan.
23You made their descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and brought them into the land you had promised to their ancestors.
24“They went in and took possession of the land. You subdued whole nations before them. Even the Canaanites, who inhabited the land, were powerless! Your people could deal with these nations and their kings as they pleased.
25Our ancestors captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took over houses full of good things, with cisterns already dug and vineyards and olive groves and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate until they were full and grew fat and enjoyed themselves in all your blessings.
26“But despite all this, they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They turned their backs on your Law, they killed your prophets who warned them to return to you, and they committed terrible blasphemies.
27So you handed them over to their enemies, who made them suffer. But in their time of trouble they cried to you, and you heard them from heaven. In your great mercy, you sent them liberators who rescued them from their enemies.
28“But as soon as they were at peace, your people again committed evil in your sight, and once more you let their enemies conquer them. Yet whenever your people turned and cried to you again for help, you listened once more from heaven. In your wonderful mercy, you rescued them many times!
29“You warned them to return to your Law, but they became proud and obstinate and disobeyed your commands. They did not follow your regulations, by which people will find life if only they obey. They stubbornly turned their backs on you and refused to listen.
30In your love, you were patient with them for many years. You sent your Spirit, who warned them through the prophets. But still they wouldn’t listen! So once again you allowed the peoples of the land to conquer them.
31But in your great mercy, you did not destroy them completely or abandon them forever. What a gracious and merciful God you are!
32“And now, our God, the great and mighty and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of unfailing love, do not let all the hardships we have suffered seem insignificant to you. Great trouble has come upon us and upon our kings and leaders and priests and prophets and ancestors—all of your people—from the days when the kings of Assyria first triumphed over us until now.
33Every time you punished us you were being just. We have sinned greatly, and you gave us only what we deserved.
34Our kings, leaders, priests, and ancestors did not obey your Law or listen to the warnings in your commands and laws.
35Even while they had their own kingdom, they did not serve you, though you showered your goodness on them. You gave them a large, fertile land, but they refused to turn from their wickedness.
36“So now today we are slaves in the land of plenty that you gave our ancestors for their enjoyment! We are slaves here in this good land.
37The lush produce of this land piles up in the hands of the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They have power over us and our livestock. We serve them at their pleasure, and we are in great misery.”
38The people responded, “In view of all this, we are making a solemn promise and putting it in writing. On this sealed document are the names of our leaders and Levites and priests.”

Key passages
Nehemiah 9:1-3 — “On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their heads….They stood at their places and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God.”

Fasting thought
“We tend to think of fasting as going without food. But we can fast from anything. If we love music and decide to miss a concert in order to spend time with God, that is fasting. It is helpful to think of the parallel of human friendship. When friends need to be together, they will cancel all other activities in order to make that possible. There’s nothing magical about fasting. It’s just one way of telling God that your priority at that moment is to be alone with him, sorting out whatever is necessary, and you have cancelled the meal, party, concert or whatever else you had planned to do in order to fulfill that priority.” J.I.Packer

Prayer
Father in heaven, as I fast today, I desire to seek your face through earnest prayer and honest confession, feeding on large portions of your word and offering responsive praise. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
